I had the responsibility of producing 3 new music albums for the Society for Universal Sacred Music, a well as festivals in Manhattan and documentary videos of our work. The purpose of the second album is to make the songs of the great universal poet, Kabir (1440-1580), better known in the Western world. This album combines Bhajan, devotional songs, with Kirtan, call-and-response chanting, all in Raga scales, performed in the classical style of Indian music.
With the exception of two compositions by Ustad Moinuddin Khan, all songs were composed by Deepak Kumar Pareek, who also performs them with his group of musicians: Naren Budhakar (tabla), Ikhlaq Hussain (sitar), Amira Dvorah (flute) and Hallie Lakshmi Goodman (tanpura). The kirtan singers from Ananda Ashram, where Deepak teaches, are Karuna, Kamaniya, Melissa, Ramaa, Kristina, Sandi, Cybele, Harrice, Sanjay and myself.
